Restaurant Kaikodo

Restaurant Kaikodo in Hilo, Hawaii County, United States | Restaurant

Restaurant Kaikodo was recently opened on the 7500 square foot ground floor of a majestic turn-of-the-century building, now known as the Kaikodo Building, in historic downtown Hilo. Here East meets Island West in newly renovated premises reflecting the interests and travels of the owner-designers who have devoted a lifetime to the arts. Asian antiques (1st century Chinese bronze vessels, mother-of-pearl inlaid lacquered baskets, 16th through 19th century Chinese paintings and Japanese screens) and architectural embellishments co-exist with a massive old-English bar, the centerpiece of the comfortable lounge. Century-old Chinese wood and glass doors, a set of ten measuring twelve-feet tall, separate a private Chinese-style dining room from the main Restaurant while a free-standing antique bedroom (originally a wedding bed-chamber) has been incorporated as a small lounge seating two to four. An extensive wine list finds congenial storage in early 20th century bank vaults which have been converted to serve as the wine cellar. Expansive windows bathe the premises in natural light during the day and whimsical Murano-glass chandeliers illuminate the evenings. A second private dining area, the Keawe Room is decorated in Japanese style to produce a subdued Zen-like atmosphere. This room is fully equipped with audio-visual equipment for conference use.
