Olhallen

Olhallen in Tromso, Troms, Norway | Pub

Olhallen (the beer hall) was established in 1928 and is Tromso's oldest Pub. One of Tromso's major attractions. Mack's range of beers are served directly from the brewery. Olhallen has its own souvenir ship with momentos from Mack Brewery.

On 30 September 1927, when Director Lauritz Bredrup reapplied for a licence to open premises where people could come to enjoy his beer in a respectable fashion, little did he know that the beer hall in Tromso was to become one of the town’s greatest tourist attractions. Olhallen was founded on 29 February 1928. Hallen, as it was called back then, was a kind of sanctuary for the male population of Tromso. It was always full of fishers, whalers, Arctic sailors, farmers and townsfolk.

Olhallen, soon become the most popular meeting place in Tromso, chemically cleansed of nagging wives. Free to speak, the narrative art quickly flourished among the men of Tromso who frequented Olhallen. It wasn’t until the end of the 60s that women were allowed entrance to Olhallen. The beer hall is still wholly owned by Mack.
