All set for simple pleasures.

Mill Cottage was originally built in 1852, by pioneer settler Charles Haylock, close to the stream that provided power for his water-driven flour mill. Charles and his wife Sarah and their four sons had arrived in Akaroa on the ‘Monarch’ in 1850. The miller and his sons built the cottage from pit-sawn totara felled on the property. Distinctive features still to be found include the original totara slabs on the back wall, hand forged nails, the steep narrow staircase and the inwards opening casement windows.

You will enjoy the unique experience of staying in a traditional pioneer cottage. The cottage is now fully restored with all the comforts of a modern home.  The main bedroom and sitting room are downstairs. The main bedroom has a queen bed with fine linen, electric blanket, down duvet, luxurious pillows and bathrobes.

The new bathroom and separate toilet are cleverly tucked into the niches of the original cottage and the shower is ensuite from the main bedroom.  The downstairs sitting room has French doors to the sunny veranda.  The dining area extends into the former kitchen with its sloping wooden ceiling and brick fireplace which now has a wood stove to heat the whole Cottage. Decorated with cottage furniture, the kitchen has a refrigerator and microwave oven and all china, cutlery and glassware. Quality teas and coffee are provided along with homemade treats and your breakfast is served here, in the sitting room, or on the veranda.  Up the old timber staircase are two attic rooms with dormer windows and views across the gardens to the hills of the Grehan Valley. One of the rooms is a bedroom with two single beds and similar furnishings to the main bedroom. The other room is now a comfortable sitting room.
