Grays Harbor National Wildlife Refuge in Hoquiam, Washington, USA was authorized for the protection of important shorebird habitat and encompasses over 1,500 hectares of intertidal mudflats, salt marsh, and uplands. Grays Harbor Estuary is one of four major staging areas for shorebirds in North America, and they gather here in Spring to feed and store up fat reserves, and rest for the non-stop flight to their northern breeding grounds. Grays Harbor National Wildlife Refuge hosts the the annual Shorebird and Nature Festival which includes field trips, lectures, workshops, a birder's market place, a nature fun fair, a banquet, guided walks and a community day, it's a not to be missed event in Spring.
