Expedtion Whydah

Expedtion Whydah in Provincetown, Barnstable County, United States | Museum

The Whydah is the only fully-authenticated pirate shipwreck ever discovered!
Originally built in London for the slave trade, she was captured in the Bahamas by the famed 18th-century pirate commander, Sam Bellamy, with an extraordinarily rich cargo aboard. Bellamy converted the 18-gun slaver to a pirate's flagship ("a free ship for free men!") and took her on a rading voyage up the Atlantic seaboard...
In 1984 a team led by underwater explorer Barry Clifford located the fabled wreck of the pirate ship Whydah, and continues to recover artifacts from the wrecksite in an on-going archaeological recovery project.
This work is headquartered at our Museum, Expedition Whydah Sea Lab & Learning Center, "just past the whalewatching fleet" on scenic Macmillan Wharf in Provincetown...
