Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Central Federal District, is the national Theatre of Russia, the quintessence of the Russian musical tradition and the international center of the music culture. Its goal is to place the classical heritage into the context of changing cultural demand of the Russian society, and to advance and develop the music Theatre in Russia.
As part of its day-to-day activities Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Central Federal District, is continuously developing numerous educational projects. The Gurre Songs by Sch?nberg has been premiered in Moscow for the first time, The Damnation of Faust, a dramatic legend by Hector Berlioz, was presented in concert setting, 15 concerts of the prominent ensembles and soloists took place as part of the Chamber Series at the Bolshoi. The recent revival of the Bolshoi Symphony concert series at the New Stage as well as the Grand Hall of Moscow Philharmonics has gained tremendous popularity among the audience.
During the Soviet takeover the theater was used on various occasions for political meetings, including the famous First All Union Congress of Soviets held on December 30th 1922, which officially acknowledged the birth of the Soviet Union. Not long after that, the theater was reopened for public performances and its reputation and repertoire has continued to grow and gather international acclaim ever since. The Bolshoi Theatre has had the honor of hosting the premieres of many operatic and ballet works by the famous Russian composers Prokofiev, Shostakovich, and Aram Khachaturyan, who wrote the spectacularly successful ballet hit of the 1960's, "Spartacus".
The Bolshoi Theatre is one of the biggest and most spectacular venues of its kind in the world. Built in 1824, after a fire destroyed the previous incarnation, it is a masterpiece of neo-classical design. Six tiers of seats over two thousand spectators in a world of chandeliers, gold stucco decoration and lavish red velvet furnishing. It's simply impossible not to be moved by a visit to the Bolshoi Theatre, and that's before the performance has even begun.
