Yaquina Bay Bridge in Newport, Oregon

Newport (in Oregon USA) lies at the mouth of the Yaquina River which flows into the Pacific Ocean via Yaquina Bay.
Since roads only reached Newport Oregon in the 1920s, the main form of transport before then was on the river. Ferries have operated across the bay from Newport to the South shore since 1866.
Once tourism to Newport became popular, holidaymakers would take the train to Toledo at the other end of Yaquina Bay and then catch a steamer along the river to Newport. A wagon would then meet them in Newport and take them to their vacation homes.
Finally in the 1920s the road system was built and a coast road The Roosevelt Highway finally reached Newport. To get to the south shore you still had to take a boat until 1936 when the Yaquina Bay Bridge was opened to a great fanfare.
The Yaquina Bay Bridge is a beautiful arch bridge 3,223 ft in length and constructed out of 3,100 tons of steel.
