World’s Fastest Train Unveiled in China
Mon, Dec 28th 2009, 12:42
The world’s fastest train was unveiled in China this week. The super-high-speed train will travel at an average speed of 350kph (217 mph) – racing ahead of other high speed trains in Japan and France that travel an average of 240 – 270 kph.
The world's fastest train went into operation on Saturday, linking the cities of Wuhan and Guangzhou in China. This is part of the Chinese government's ambitious rail upgrade programme which saw its first high speed train launched for the Beijing Olympics. The Chinese plan to expand their rail network by some 30,000 kilometres which will make it the most extensive in the world. It is hoped that these efforts will provide a stimulus to the Chinese economy and help to steer the country through the global economic crisis.
Guangzhou is a commercial centre in the south of China and this new super-high-speed train is the start of a link which will continue all the way through to capital, Beijing. Journey times have been more than halved by this new super-high-speed train.
