This year will be the 13th annual World Ocean Day … and now the United Nations has made it official celebration on 8 June each year.
World Ocean Day is the opportunity for us all to celebrate our connection with the oceans. This is something close to the heart of all baysiders and it is this connection that makes baysider living so special. Join the rest of the planet in marking this special day in your own community.

Almost half of the world's population lives at or close to a coastline, and scientists estimate that 6 billion people will live within 200 kilometres of a coastline by 2025. We humans rely on the oceans for our survival - a significant proportion of our protein needs comes from seafood and $500 billion of the global economy is tied to ocean-based industry.
The health of the ocean is also essential for the survival of the planet. Water circulates around the world in a complex system of currents that regulates our climate and facilitates the flow of nutrients through our biosphere.
We are in grave danger that our oceans are being destroyed - sea temperatures are rising and the waters are acidifying. This will effect the vast variety of sealife ... species are disappearing, invasive species are taking over, diseases are spreading and many animals are losing their source of food. Sea level rise is a major factor that will effect communities that live in the coastal regions, together with the increase in severe weather conditions and violent storms.
"Our Oceans, Our Responsibility" is the theme for 2009 World Oceans Day chosen by the United Nations.
