November sees a carnival that marks the start of the tourist season in Thailand each year. Phuket streets come alive.
Patong (meaning the forest filled with banana leave") is the centre of tourist activity on Phuket and this is where you will find most of the nightlife, restaurants and cheap shopping. In December the place becomes an international melting pot of jet-setters and parties abound along the whole coast from Nai Harn to Kata to Karon and Patong.
Phuket offers a feast for the senses, and your taste buds are in for a special treat. The Andaman Sea is bursting with reefs supporting a cornucopia of delicious fish.
Vendors bob through the streets with rattan baskets slung on poles balanced across their shoulders. Feast on grilled bananas, sweet potato, corn or eggs (still in their shell) … not to mention steamed groundnuts, satay, deep fried spring rolls, meatballs on skewers, flour dumplings with sweet or savoury fillings, sticky rice or red beans wrapped in banana leaves.
Fruit is abundant in Thailand too. Choose your piece from a vendor and he will chop it into bite size pieces with a skewer as your eating utensil. You will be offered a sugar and chilli mix which the Thai's like to dip their fresh fruit in for that extra bite!
Some vendors even have a hotplate for grilling tiny coconut puddings, banana pancakes spread with condensed milk, or smaller pancakes spread with coconut cream and topped with shredded coconut.
Many vendors find a spot where they arrange a few chairs and tables, an informal restaurant for customers to sit and enjoy their food on the side of the street while they watch the world go by.
