The Seychelles Islands Conservation Policies

The Seychelles Islands are made up of over 115 different islands scattered around the Indian Ocean. With such a vast area to protect the Seychelles is extremely proud of the achievements in the area of conservation.

One of the many conservation policies the Seychelles Islands have in place is the total ban of spear guns throughout Seychelles’ waters. The local customs officials either at, the Seychelles International Airport or at the Seychelles Victoria Harbour, will confiscate such items from anyone who attempts to enter the Seychelles with such a banned item.

Another conservation measure is the banning of fishing in certain areas around the islands. Theses restricted Seychelles Fishing grounds are patrolled by park rangers Such area's are: The boundaries of the Seychelles Marine National Parks of- Curieuse, Ile Cocos, Port Launay/Baie Ternay and Ste. Anne Marine. In addtion no fishing is permitted within 200 metres of Aride Island Nature Reserve.

The Seychelles widely promotes the practice of ‘tag and release’ in order to safeguard fish stocks for future generations of fishermen.

The gentle Whale Shark forms a part of the conversation policies of the Seychelles and the Whale Shark is a protected specie by Seychelles Law as well as by CITES ( Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). The Whale Shark can been seen in the Seychelles’ waters during the month of August and from October to January.
