Osaka Kuidaore, the love of Japanese Food
Wed, Aug 8th 2007, 00:00
As we continue our culinary bayside tour, lets stop off in Japan ... Osaka is famous for its down to earth citizens and a love of food which is legendary among the Japanese.
After all, it was Osaka that originated the philosophy of Kuidaore: Eat until you burst!
Often dubbed the nation's kitchen (tenka no daidokoro), Osaka comes alive at night, its streets lined with flashing neon signs beckoning passers by to the feast that awaits indoors. There are eating establishments to suit every occasion, a vast array of restaurants serving both Japanese food and international cuisine ... from kaiten zushi restaurants, where customers sit at a counter and choose sushi from a conveyor belt ...
to Kanso (can bar), a uniquely Osakan invention. The shelves stock a wide range of canned food, from chili to curried sea lion. Make your selection and the staff will open the can and supply you with a plastic fork or spoon to consume the contents!
Or dine out on the street. An Osaka delicacy is takoyaki, bits of octopus inside fried dumplings, best eaten from street vendors carts found all over the major districts around nightfall.
