Nantucket architecture in the USA

Nantucket has an incredibly rich architectural heritage. Downtown Nantucket is the oldest part of town and boasts over 800 houses that were built before the American Civil War.
In fact, Nantucket has a collection of houses that were built from the 1600s. The oldest surviving house was built as a wedding gift in 1656 – and enduring monument to love!
Everywhere you turn there is a piece of history. The cobblestone streets tell their own story. They are made of the stone used as ballast on the ships returning empty to Nantucket after delivering their precious cargo of whale oil to Europe and the Pacific. The old windmill still stands, having ground corn since 1746. It is one of the oldest working windmills in the USA.
The prosperous days when Nantucket was a centre of the whaling industry, meant that many people had the money to build beautiful homes and furnish them with the finest furniture. This heritage has been handed down through the generations and there are many fine antique pieces still to be found in old Nantucket.
The National Register of Historic Places has placed Nantucket on the endangered list as many of the old houses are threatened by modern building developments. This would be a great shame as Nantucket is a living history of early American architecture.
