It was Brian Hyland crooning “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” in the 1960s that sparked a revolution on the world’s beaches ... the emergence of the bikini! But the bikini had actually been around for some time before that.

The modern bikini was unveiled to the world in 1946, patented by Frenchman Louis Reard. Reard had worked in the family's lingerie boutique and realised that these little scraps of material he was launching on the world would be explosive. He named them after the Bikini Atoll, the site of a US Nuclear missile explosion just days before.

No professional model in Paris would agree to model the new bikini for the launch so Reard enlisted the services of exotic dancer, Micheline Bernardini. She became an overnight hit and received bagfuls of fanmail from admiring gentleman. The bikini had moderate success in France but it was severely frowned upon in other parts of the world. It was only in the 1960s that the mainstream world was ready for the bikini.
