Often referred to as Scotland in Miniature, the Isle of Arran has a varied landscape ... from the valleys and meadows of the south to the mountains of the north.
The Arran Islands in Ireland should not be confused with the Isle of Arran off the coast of Scotland. The Isle of Arran is just two hours west of the city of Glasgow, one of Scotlands most accessible islands. A 57-mile road circles the island, taking you on a coastal drive through charming villages and beautiful seacapes.
Visitors to the Isle of Arran will usually arrive at the Lochranza ferry terminal. Nearby is the site of Lochranza castle which lies on a promontory in the middle of Loch Ranza. This castle has a history since the 1200’s.
Brodick is the main village on Arran, set on the eastern side of the island below Goats Fell, the tallest point. Goats Fell and nearby Brodick Castle are National Trust properties and visitors can explore the fauna and flora of this beautiful area.
Holy Island is located in Lamlash Bay, just south of Brodick. It is an island 3 kilometres long, 1 km wide. It has been considered a sacred site for aeons. It has a spring said to have healing properties.
People have lived on Arran Island since 4,500BC. Machrie Moor on the west coast features 6 stone circles, obviously part of a complex of megaliths used by inhabitants in the Neolithic and Stone Age.
