Hawkes Bay Wine, Wine from New Zealand
Mon, May 26th 2008, 00:00
With an annual average of 2,200, sunshine hours a year and balmy Mediterranean climate with low humidity, the hills and plains of Hawkes Bay are a perfect environment for growing fruit.
Hawkes Bay is one of New Zealand’s oldest grape growing areas and a lead producer of award winning red wines. Wines have been produced in Hawkes Bay for over 100 years. A Marist Mission was established by a group of French Missionaries in 1838 and they were soon growing grapes to produce sacramental wine. The Mission Vineyard still thrives today.
Te Mata Estate was established in the 1890s and now has ten vineyards in Hawkes Bay. Te Mata currently produces 25,000 cases of wine, most of it red. The Estate has a reputation for producing some of the finest wines in the country.
Hawkes Bay wines are now produced by a plethora of wine estates in a variety of growing conditions, from the coastal zone to river plains and more recently up the hillsides and higher altitudes of Central Hawkes Bay.
The Wine Country Food Trail has been established to celebrate the wines and associated gourmet delights of the Hawkes Bay area. The trail features wineries, farms, artisan food producers and other food-destinations. Another event not to be missed is the weekly Hawke's Bay Farmers Markets in Napier on Tennyson Street every Saturday morning and at the Hawkes Bay Showgrounds on Sunday mornings.
