As the Romans continued to trade wine in Marseille, it was not long before the people around Marseille decided to establish their own vineyards.
They were so sucessful that the Roman Emperor eventually issued a decree forbidding the trade of French wines because they were competing with the Roman wines.
Provence and the Côtes du Rhône (along the Rhone River) were the first regions to produce wine in France. French winemaking thrived during the middle ages when most vineyards were in the hands of the monasteries – Châteauneuf du Pape was favoured by the Popes who spent their holidays there!
From the full bodied red wines of the oldest vineyards, Châteauneuf du Pape and Côte Rôtie, to exquisite whites and the fruity reds of the southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône is probably the most diverse wine region in France.
Provence is known for its fresh and fruity rosé wine, a perfect complement to the fresh seafood from the coast
