The emirate of Dubai has attracted much of the attention over the past years ... for the most ambitious building expansion plan the world has seen in a long time.


Dubai is a hive of activity, construction of some of the world's most impressive buildings continues at an impressive rate. Skyscrapers go up with the latest in technology, Burj Dubai can claim to be the worlds tallest building, and the man made islands are this millenniums hottest destination.

The emirate of Dubai gets its name from Dubai Creek, a natural inlet in the Persian Gulf. The creek is over 9 miles long, a perfect natural harbour which became a centre in the region for sea trade. Dubai has a strategic location within easy access of East Africa, Asia and the rest of the Middle East. Back in 1892 the emirate declared foreign nationals exempt from tax which further strengthened its position as a thriving commercial centre.

Dubai Creek began to silt up during the 1950s, prompting the late Seikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum to begin the first ambitious project to dredge the creek and upgrade the harbour. When oil was discovered in the 1960s, the wealth that flowed into Dubai was astounding. This was used to ugrade infrastructure and pave the way for the development of the thoroughly modern city that Dubai is today.
