Coast Guard Beach is one of Americas most beautiful beaches.
The powdery beach sand stretches for miles offering a perfect taste of the beautiful Cape Cod National Seashore. Coast Guard Beach is named after the historic old Coast Guard station which still stands high on the dunes. During WWII the beach saw active Coast Guard duty but now the Coast Guard station is used as an environmental education centre.
Surfers love the waves at Coast Guard beach. Sand bars are created by the currents of the Nauset Inlet and the powerful ocean creates beautiful rideable waves favoured by surfers and boogieboarders alike. Be warned, the water is a little nippy!
The best way to enjoy this coastline is to take one of the hikes and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the Cape Cod National Seashore.
Head for The Three Sisters of Nauset, a set of three lighthouses built in 1837. The builders opted for 3 lights to distinguish the lighthouse station from the single light of North Truro and the double lights at Chatham, though many thought that 3 lights was overkill for this area.
Over the years the area round the three sisters eroded severely and in 1911 2 of the lights were removed and the towers passed into private hands.
Erosion is continuous on the Cape Cod coast and the lighthouse tower had to be relocated to safer ground. Ownership of the old lighthouses is now in the hands of the Cape Cod National Seashore; the Three Sisters are accessible via the walking trail from the parking area at Nauset Light Beach.
