Bikini Styles

Since the bikini became more socially acceptable in the 1960s, bikini design has become a new artform using less and less fabric so that tanning can take place on as much skin as possible without having to go naked.

Bikini Styles:

Bikini Bottoms

Boyleg
Bikini bottoms resemble shorts (hotpants) with the leg line in line with the crutch.

Band side
Bikini briefs with a high legline and thicker band of material over each hip.

String bikini
Bikini briefs held together with a string. The string over each hip can be fitted or tied in a bow.

Monokini
The term originally used to define a one-piece bikini (ie. topless). These days it also refers to the bikini style half way between a one-piece and two-piece: where top and bottom are joined by a decorative strip.

Thong
Bikini bottoms exposing as much buttock as possible. Sometimes known as cheeky.

G-string
A variety of thong where the bikini bottoms consist of a triangle of material in the front and just a string at the back exposing the buttocks. Despite the name, the strings usually make a T shape over the buttocks.

V-string
The back string of a V-string bikini separates into two strings that make a V pattern over the buttocks.

C-string
The latest in bikini bottom technology. There are no side straps. The briefs are shaped in a C shape which cup over the crotch covering only the essentials to allow for no unsightly tan lines.

Bikini Tops

Tankinis
Bikini top resembles a vest. The effect is similar to a one-piece, but top and bottom are separate. A crop top would be cut short to reveal the midriff.

String
Bikini top with two triangle shapes to cover the breasts, held together with strings tied behind the back and behind the neck.

Halterneck
Bikini top style where the straps or strings tie around the neck exposing shoulders and back.

Bandeau
A band of material covers the breasts in a strapless style bikini top. This style is not advisable for larger breasted women.

Tan-friendly Bikinis

Monokini
Invented in 1964 as a bikini bottom where the sides stretched over the shoulder like straps. (The male version has recently been popularised by Sascha Cohen in his comedy film about the character Borat!) These days there are different styles, from one-piece swimwear with large cutouts around the waist to mimic a bikini style, or bikinis where top and bottom are joined with a strip of fabric or decorative detail like mesh or chain.

Minikini (Brazilian bikini) and Microkini
The bikini could not get any smaller than this. Tiny triangles of material cover breasts and crotch, held together with string. And just when you thought the bikini could not get any smaller, along came the shrunken Microkini.
