Bikini Atoll Diving

Fri, Aug 28th 2009, 12:27

Bikini Atoll has some of the most dramatic wreck diving opportunities in the world thanks to its history as a military test site.

Wreck diving in the Bikini Atoll is deep - dives range between 100 feet and 170 feet - so every dive requires decompression. The Bikini Atoll lagoon reaches depths of 180 feet (54 metres in places).

One of the Bikini Atoll diving highlights is the wreck of the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga, which at 900 feet long is bigger than the Titanic. The ship went down with 4 aircraft still on board - the torpedo bomber is still sitting in its hangar!

There is also a 311 foot long completely intact US submarine and the 708 foot HIJMS Natato, flagship of the Japanese Navy and site of the surrender of the Japanese in 1945 at the end of the Second World War.

Read about the Bikinian woman who dived the ships.
