According to the WWF, 52% of the world’s fisheries are fully exploited and 24% are overexploited, depleted, or recovering from depletion. Already 30% of the world’s fish requirements are met by the aquaculture industry.
Fish is a critical source of protein for the world's population. 1 billion people rely on seafood for a large part of their diet and 150 million people earn their living through the oceans. However, the global fishing industry is at a critical mass, many believe it is 2.5 times too large for the oceans to support.
Fish stocks are gone in over a third of the world's fisheries. Populations of the large fish such as tuna, cod and halibut are now standing at 10% of what they once were and the increasing fashion for seafood and sushi is putting even greater pressure on this tiny population.
Aquaculture is a growing industry that hopes to provide a solution to our seafood requirements. Aquaculture is the farming of freshwater and saltwater organisms, shellfish and fish.
The Aquaculture Industry is a fast growing industry. World aquaculture production doubled between 1984 and 1995 to nearly 21 million metric tons. This represents a $36.2 billion industry providing a third of the world's food requirements.
