A holiday in Wales - Llyn Peninsula
Thu, Dec 10th 2009, 15:56
An overview of the delights of the Llyn Peninsula of North Wales: holiday haunt of a few discerning people from the Cheshire area for many years, a closely guarded secret.
Tucked away in the very north-west of Wales is the Llyn (or LLeyn) Peninsula. This diverse and stunningly beautiful region is truly a peninsula, being surrounded on three sides by the Irish Sea. It has been the holiday haunt of a few discerning people from the Cheshire area for many years. To preserve the beauty and tranquility, its whereabouts has been a closely guarded secret.
The interior of the Llyn consists of wild areas of moorland, interspersed, on the more fertile areas, by traditional farms. The non-intensive nature of farming here has meant that the appearance of the countryside is very much as it probably was 50 years ago. The lengthy coastline consists of very different topographies, from stunningly high craggy cliffs, to long golden beaches.
Wildlife thrives in this area. A number of offshore islands provide nesting sites for ocean going seabirds that return to breed in the spring and early summer. The rich waters also provide food for very successful local populations of Atlantic Grey Seals and Bottlenose Dolphins. Even the Porpoise, that is in general decline in the northern hemisphere, seems to be thriving here. The whole of the Llyn coastline is designated a Special Site of Conservation with European legislative backing to enforce it.
The area is geared for providing traditional family holidays with accommodation available in the local towns and villages, such as Llanbedrog, Abersoch and Criccieth. Virtually all public houses have attached restaurants to cater for the holiday visitor. Whilst there are superb well-trodden coastal and inland footpaths, and plenty to hold the interest of the visitor, the Llyn is also within sight of Snowdonia, with Snowdon being clearly visible.
One attraction on the Llyn Peninsula is "Shearwater" Coastal Cruises, based in the marina of Pwllheli. "Shearwater" is a luxury charter cruiser and specialises in visits to seabird and seal colonies of the coast when it is regularly accompanied by the resident dolphins.
For details of the cruises and also details of bed and breakfast and other available accommodation on the Llyn Peninsula visit their website: www.shearwatercruises.com Should you wish to experience a traditional holiday, in a peaceful, slow moving world of yesteryear, you must visit the Llyn Peninsula. They look forward to meeting you.

A holiday in Wales - Llyn Peninsula reviews

I have been on the 'Shearwater' twice now and thoroughly enjoyed both times. The boat crew were very friendly and informative throughout the trip, and for me personally as an electric wheelchair user they were extremely helpful in assisting me on and off the wheelchair friendly boat, (there is also an accessible toilet on board). As for value for money well I would say you can't go wrong as it really is a wonderful experience cruising along the Welsh coast and seeing the various wildlife, including seals and dolphins which was a real highlight. When I am next in that area I will definately be booking a third time on the 'Shearwater'
